Please read the FDA report on dietary DCM!
I learned to read labels for fresh human grade ingredients in my dog’s food and support ‘made in the USA’ companies. I also talk to other dog owners where dogs had special needs (or not) when it comes to diet to learn what others are feeding.
Vets are usually not nutritionists, so they don’t have the market cornered on best food choices for your dog. They do know when to put you in the right direction if your dog has a disease, but then they only support 2 brands that they sell in office or you can buy on line with their prescription. These companies use ingredient brokers who buy from China and this is bad for our dog’s food providing minimal nutrients. Most brands in the grocery store or anything advertised on TV is a poor quality dog food choice.
I am hoping better ‘Human Grade’ dog food companies start to produce prescription diets, so our pets can have a higher quality and healthier food choice while supporting their special needs.
My favorites:
RAW – FRESH – HOMEMADE : These food options are the best to add to/or replace existing kibble. Dogs need a variety of different proteins and nutrients.
Beef Heart – GREAT for much needed TAURINE in a dog’s diet! I get chunked from the local butcher and flash boil a few seconds to kill any surface bacteria and center is extremely rare!
Eggs – soft or hard boil.
Liver – boil or bake. Make sure not to give too much liver it is high in Vitamin A and can cause loose stools if you give too much.
Sardines – in water from the grocery store, a nice addition.
RMB (Raw Meaty Bones) I get frozen femurs from the butcher and the marrow is the best for dogs!
RAW Mixtures (including TRIPE) from the butcher can also be purchased that contain all the nutrients a dog needs. You can feed it raw or slightly cooked!
Boiling ?? Save the meat juice for ice cubes or a warm topper for your pup!
Canine Caviar Canine Caviar is an Alkaline dry food that I have fed for years! My Doberman’s coats have been awesome on this food and it is especially valuable if your dog has allergies.
Nature’s Logic Nature’s Logic is 100% natural and made from trusted meat sources. It does not use peas, lentils, or legumes that prevent Taurine absorption.
The Honest Kitchen (Raw Dehydrated ) This grain inclusive dog food combines organic oats and barley with ranch raised beef for a low fat, moderate protein meal perfect for adult and senior dogs. It’s especially suited for weight management.
The Farmers Dog (Fresh Food) This food is not completely raw but very lightly cooked at a low temperature. It comes in frozen packets so its very convenient but pricey.
Evermore (gently cooked) Beyond Human Grade home cooked diet. I am incorporating this food into their diet so I can trade off with a quality kibble.
Human grade food is what our dogs need too! Read ingredients stringently, especially in Peanut butter and soft dog treats! Stay away from Xylitol and Propylene glycol. Research ingredients that are foreign to you!!! Check out some healthy choices…
